Qty is the total quantity per piece, black and white. Each chess set ships with the regulation 32 pieces. Width is the diameter of the widest part of the base, measured in inches, and is accurate to ±5%. Note that all plastic MegaChess pieces are composed of two screw-together parts, with the base part the same for all pieces. Height is the distance from the base to the highest part of the piece, measured in inches, and is accurate to ±5%. Weight is the weight of each single piece, accurate to ±5%. Note that by adding sand to the hollow base, you can add up to another 9 pounds to each piece.

The high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic is recycled mostly from the plastic milk cartons you bring to the recycling centers. It is a soft plastic suitable for energetic young chess players who like to throw the pieces around as part of a satisfying chess game. This MegaChess set is rugged enough to throw out of airplanes.

When planning a playing area, consider the minimum playing area as a square 112 inches (9'4") on a side, the same as the plastic chessboard that we sell. Add to that room to walk around the playing area and for pieces taken during the game.

Weighting the pieces for a more solid feel is as simple as unscrewing the base, as shown at left. Filling the base with pea gravel, as shown at right, adds about 9 pounds to the piece. You can fill the base partly for intermediate weights.
